Match report – HDD Bears vs White Men Can’t Stump

It was a great day for cricket last Sunday and the Bears were looking for a big win to delay their off season hibernation! White Men Can’t Stump had both youth and a more witty name on their side. I estimate their average age at 25.7 vs the Bears 39.3. They also had the Bears measure in the tattoo department – Dave‘s new rose behind the ear not really cutting it against the arm, chest, neck and leg work on display from the opposition.

The Bears batted first and Dane and Charles started brilliantly with boundaries flowing from the Ivey blade in the first 3 overs. There was serious concern for the ground at fine leg at one point as one of the less athletic WMCS players dived to cut off a delightful hook shot from Charles.

The bowlers slowly pegged back our scoring and it was shaping up as an even contest. Charles reached 50 from 32 and despite not finding the middle as regularly, Dane continued his good season with the bat adding another 50 from 37.

From that point it was tough going – with the big Boronia outfield helping WMCS to restrict us to 3/148 from our 20. Raymond added 16 from 12, Joe12 from 16, Swifty 9 from 8 and your match correspondent was feeling good with 5 from 3 before being harshly judged LB!

We knew we could notch our 7th win of the season if we started well and our confidence increased slightly when one opposition opener strode the crease shirtless with durry in hand. Despite every effort by Charles to keep WMCS in the game (my 4 year old mentioned in the car on the way home he would have taken both of those sitters), Richard took 3 wickets in his first 3 overs to have the tatt-boys reeling.

The fielding improved throughout the innings and we bowled WMCS out for 118 – just securing what might prove the vital 20% bonus points.

It was great bowling all around with Dane chiming in with 1 for 19 and the other wicket takers being Charles 1 for 21, Joe 1 for 14 and Dave 1 for 27. But Rich finished MOM with 4 for 13.

Sensational win boys!
